The Silver Sun Mall is located at 3rd Street and the Boulevard in Beach Haven. It houses a variety of small stores selling beach goods, art and clothing.  Prior to it’s current incarnation as a mall, the Silver Sun was home to Koseff’s,

The Koseff Brothers got their start selling Peanuts and other things to passengers arriving on the Tuckerton – Long Beach Island trains. The southern end of the railroad terminated at Station Plaza and 3rd Street. The railroad station was torn down and replaced by houses.  They built a hardware and fishing tackle store. During the 1960’s my father and I made many a run to Koseff’s for items for the house.

Some time in the 1970’s they did a major renovation to the store. It was no longer a plain old hardware store. A large portion of the store was dedicated to upscale furniture and decor. Unfortunately this was at a time when the island was still composed of small cape cod cottages and bungalows. They redesigned the store as a mall. At one time there was a food court with a ‘ship’ for seating. One of the stands sold fried ice cream.  The Koseff family retained a small variety store in the mall.

The food court was eventually removed and the store was converted to it’s present configuration.

  2. I worked here doing maintenance work the last three years it was Pier 18 Mall in the late 90’s, up until the year 2000 when I was a teenager. This was also the first (and best) job I ever had. My parents knew, and were friends with the Koseffs as well. Unfortunately the former owner Renny sadly passed away two years ago in the year 2020. It’s so sad and depressing with how trashy, and seedy the place has now become, with having very little left, and to buy inside of it, to the point that it’s pretty much become a third world flea market these days. The store is definitely a far cry from when it was both an LBI icon, and signature hangout during it’s heyday, unlike now too. 🙁

  3. But I DO see that the Silver Sun Mall is for sale now! I wonder what, if anything will eventually come of that? Hopefully whoever buys it will make the place great again like it was during the Pier 18 era too!

  4. Well it looks like the mall didn’t sell after all, unfortunately. But I found an application online about the owner wanting to apparently do some kind of renovation to the place, which would consist of it being a two-story mixed-use building, with the first floor being utilized as commercial retail space, with the second story containing two two-bedroom residential units, and retail storage space. Not sure exactly what this will mean, and/or what will come of it, but will be interesting to see how this proposal will develop, and what will eventually become of this place, shall it be approved.

  5. But the Silver Sun Mall is now no more, and totally gone! Can’t say I didn’t see this day coming, and while it’s the end of an era, the place sure was depressing for certain, and not even a mere shell of what it was back in it’s heyday!
