Photos of the schooner, Lucy Evelyn,  right after she was beached in Beach Haven and converted to a gift shop.

These photos were taken just after the Lucy Evelyn was beached permanently in Beach Haven.  Also, see our photos of her riding at anchor in Little Egg Harbor. We take photographs for granted today. Almost everyone has a cell phone, even children. Photography was different in the 1940’s. Cameras ranged from expensive press cameras to 35 millimeter cameras to ‘box cameras’. When you took a photograph, the negatives had to be developed and printed. This was a relatively costly process. This makes photos such as these rare and something to be appreciated.

The photo below shows the Lucy Evelyn after she was beached. The door was already cut in the starboard side of the hull. All of her rigging was intact. The original masts and booms were in place. If you look closely on her starboard side, you can see the two curved boat davits. The Schooner’s Wharf was built in the same location after she burned in January 1972

For more details on the schooner, see our main Lucy Evelyn Page.

For a very small fee, visitors could tour the cabins in the aft part of the ship and the decks

She was a three masted schooner.

Below is the approximate location where the schooner was beached.

    1. It is changing quickly. Sometimes I feel I need to take a map when I go more than two blocks lest something change

  1. I remember spending the summers in Beach Haven when I was 4-9years old my family built a house for 14,000 dollars on Jacqueline Ave those are some of my fondest memories . The years were 1963-1969 . The Lucy Evelyn and amusement park nearby were always a treat . The island was fairly undeveloped no houses on the sand dunes . Those were gentler times how I wish I could go back there …. I didn’t realize then those would be the best years of my life .

    1. The amusement park was Hartman’s. I still remember the huge slide and the robot built of car parts.

      It is now Fantasy Island.

      1. I worked at Hartmans during the summer of 1974. I was the girl that made change for dollars “Dimes or quarters” I’d ask. They were to be used for the arcade games the kids were playing. And skee ball! Yes, wonderful memories for a great summer at Beach Haven!

  2. Spent all my summers on LBI, particularly in Beach Haven from the ’50’s until the early ’70’s. Fun nights
spent at Hartman’s and browsing the gift shop on the Lucy Evelyn. Sadly, I saw the remains of the
schooner shortly after its devastating fire in early 1972.

  3. My family always rented a house on Long Breach Island
, New Jersey for vac action through the 50’s and 60’s. I was born in 1947 and remember it well. If only I could return to those days. The Baldwin Motel, Lucy Evelyn The Surflite Theater….. All so precious in my memories. I have not returned sine the Lucy Evelyn burned. I now live in Idaho.

  4. My fondness memories have our family vacations on LBI.My parents rented the same house every year for two weeks in Ship Bottom.I was born in 1942 so I am 80yrs old and Cherish my fond memories of those times.my grandparents went there when they were young and my children and grandchildren have great memories as well.4 generations have been to LBI and loving everything about it.

    1. Kathleen. I am 71 and we did the same. Every summer about a month in Harvey Cedars.
I wouldn’t be happy seeing LBI today.
      Great times. Great memories.

  5. I spent all my summers growing up on LBI the 60’s- 80’s. My family had a beach house in beach haven on 13th street. The ship was just a few blocks away. Made many a visit to it. The crust and crumb bakery was a favorite too
