Massacre at Long Beach Island – Oct 26, 1782

There is a plaque just outside of Viking Village in Barnegat Light memorializing a Massacre of Patriots by British Loyalists during the War for Independence. 

Location

The Marker is located at 20th Street and Bayview Avenue in Barnegat light

The plaque reads:

1776-1783

Massacre at Long Beach Island
October 26, 1782

Near this place, Privateer Capt. Andrew Steelman, his crew from the armed row galley Alligater, and a few local residents slept on the beach after an exhausting day of unloading the cargo from the cutter En Route from Belgium to St. Thomas that ran aground on the Barnegat Shoals. Notorious Capt. John Bacon, with a band of loyalists attacked and captured the ship and cargo. According to Patriot’s accounts about twenty mostly unarmed and unsuspecting patriots, including Capt. Steelman, were slaughtered

Erected by the board of Chosen Freeholders to Commemorate Ocean County’s role in the American Revolution on its 22th anniversary . 2001-2008
