King Steak at the Old Causeway

The Old Causeway Steak and Oyster House – Manahawkin August 2023

My son and I stopped in the Old Causeway Steak and Oyster House in Manahawkin for a great dinner

Overview

The Old Causeway Steak and Oyster House is on East Bay Avenue in Manahawkin. Prior to the construction of the new causeway all of the traffic to and from the island used Bay Avenue. Even in the 1960’s traffic used Bay Avenue. As the current route 72 was built the traffic on Bay Avenue decreased resulting in decreased traffic to local businesses.

The Mud City Crab House is associated with the Old Causeway and a number of other restaurants.

We were in pretty much of a random mode that day after picking up a washing machine at Anchor Appliance. We needed a washer and we needed it NOW. Anchor came through for us.

We took a look at the Crab House and decided to try the Old Causeway instead. There really wasn’t any thought or planning involved.

We were seated immediately without reservations. This was about 5 pm on a Tuesday. By the time we were done dinner, there was a waiting line.

The interior is that of a rustic seafood/steak house. There are a lot of old photos, especially of the old causeway (The bridge and the restaurant) . There is a beer can collection adorning the walls that belongs to the owner. If I am correct, the restaurant was rebuilt around 2013.

Appetizers

Our server was fantastic. I ordered a Porter and my son ordered a barrel aged Manhattan and a pink Grigio. ( I was driving so I was one and done).

We ordered the Pork Belly and Crab cake appetizers and split those. We had pork bellies at Bird and Betty’s earlier in the day. Both were fantastic. The crab cake comes with a remoulade. The Pork bellies are
house-cured with gochujang glaze, OC slaw and Texas toast

Main Course

There is a King Steak on the menu. We asked if we could have that with a New York Strip instead of the cut on the menu. No fuss at all. We split the steak and king crab legs as well as the asparagus.

Desert

We skipped desert as we were both a bit full. The bill came out to something like $138 plus tip. That was money well spent.

Location

The Old Causeway is located on East Bay Avenue. There is a large parking lot for both the Old Causeway and Mud City but it does get filled. There is some parking on the local streets. At the current time, they take reservations.
