At one time the owners of The Colonial would show a free movie for the local kids on Christmas Day. The movie was always Tarzan and the cartoon preceding it was always Woody Woodpecker. Reply
I worked at The Colonial theater during the last years it operated under Hoyts. I believe the Franks ran it for one further summer afterward. It was a really cool place! Originally it was a single screen, and during summer months (back in the day) it had tonnes of ice brought in and stacked behind the screen to cool the space for attendees. During my tenure we mostly had kids movies and other films at the end of their runs. Most days were quiet, maybe selling 1-2 tickets before 6pm, but oh boy did it get crazy when it rained! I was often the only person I could budget having at the theater.. and I would race from selling tickets to setting up the film, and trying to get folks some concessions. They were fun days, at the end of high school and my first couple years at uni I would come back down and work the theater during the summers. Reply
