A look at Long Beach Island, NJ
The USS Monssen was being towed while the March 1962 Nor’easter ravaged Long Beach Island. She broke loose from her tow and ended up hard aground in Holgate.
Bonds’ Lifesaving Station in Holgate is now a private residence. It was one of six stations on Long Beach Island.
The LBI Trailer Park was a fixture on Long Beach Island for Decades. It was located in the Holgate/Inlet section and provided some of the most affordable housing on the island. Unfortunately the owners decided to not rebuild after Hurricane Sandy.
Bowker’s South Beach Grill is located in Holgate at the southernmost end of the boulevard
At the very south end of Long Beach Island, in Holgate, there is a beach area for fishing and bathing. These activities are dependent on the condition of the beach and nesting birds. There is a small parking area (Free in 2018) along with restrooms. Bowker’s is a short walk if you want to grab something to eat.
